Set, Go!

The doctor's office called me Wednesday, May 8, to let me know the hospital would be calling me in to be induced sometime after midnight. We got the call around 3 a.m. and reported to the hospital around 4 a.m. on Thursday, May 9.

They checked me in, hooked me up to the monitor and let me know the ultrasound tech would be in shortly to make sure both babies were still in position. The nurse was great and she said they were excited to get to do a vaginal twin birth since most of them end up being C-sections.

The ultrasound tech came in and found that my darling little boy had flipped over again! There was 14 pounds of baby in there...how did he have room to keep flipping around? AND...how did he flip in less than 48 hours? I was a little miffed!

My doctor came in around 7 a.m. If I wasn't dilated very far he said I could go home and wait a couple days hoping little boy B would flip again, but I was dilated to a five. Which meant my babies would be born by C-section that afternoon. They scheduled us for 11, but we got bumped for two emergency C-sections. So we didn't end up going back until 2:30 or 3 p.m.

Wil ready to head back for the C-section.

If I'm being honest, I was terrified to have a C-section, but I kept telling myself lots of women have C-sections and say they are no big deal.

I got my spinal block and tried not to cry as I lay on the operating table and threw up waiting for the medicine to finish kicking in. They put up the screen and Wil came back to meet me. They were already cutting by the time they brought him in - which oddly just felt like a lot of tugging on my stomach.

Wil stood up to watch over the screen, but my flap of skin was up and blocking his view from seeing down into where the babies were. They broke the little girl's water and I heard Wil say, "wow...that's a lot of water!" Apparently, it came shooting out of me like a fountain!

Seconds later our little girl was out and seconds after that her brother followed suit. They showed both babies to me over the curtain - which was actually kind of freaky because they came out all purple and covered in white stuff.

They sent Wil with the babies while the doctor stitched me up and moved me to the recovery room.

As the doctor was stitching me up, he told me the little boy started stretching, moving and trying to get out as soon as they broke the little girl's water. I think he wanted to be first...which is why he flipped in the first place. If they had been born vaginally, he definitely would have been second. At least this way there was a chance they might take him first. Silly boy!

Ready!

I went to my weekly ultrasound and OB appointment Tuesday, May 7, ready to deliver! I even had my grandma take some pictures of me, just in case they sent me straight to the hospital.

37 weeks pregnant with twins!

My ultrasound estimated the boy was about 7 pounds 9 ounces and the girl was 6 pounds 12 ounces. That's a LOT of baby!

Addie was only 7 pounds 11 ounces. When my doctor walked in, he looked at my chart and said, "wouldn't it be funny if one of your twins was bigger than your single birth?" To which I thought..."yeah, hysterical...now when do we get them out?"

My ultrasound tech was continually amazed that the twins managed to flip themselves around inside me all of the time. For weeks, they would both have flipped head to toe at every appointment. Eventually the girl - Baby A - settled in head down and stopped moving. But little boy B still moved all the time. He was sideways breech at my 36 week appointment. Anything besides two heads down, and I would have to have a c-section. I actually walked away from that appointment mad at my unborn son! The entire pregnancy, he had hung out in the middle of my uterus and simply pushed his sister out of the way and now I might have to have a C-section because of him. What a bully!

When I went to my May 7 appointment, I was thrilled when he was head down and in position! I was packed and ready to go to the hospital, but the doctor had to get permission from the hospital first to induce at 37 weeks and said he would be in touch with when I should report to the hospital.

Overheard

Overheard at our house the past couple weeks.

**********

Me - "Addie, did you have fun at nursery today?"
Addie - "Good."
Me - "What did you learn about?"
Addie - "Toys!"

**********

Addie, after I stood up from the dinner table to get something - "Mommy, you're BIG!"

**********

Addie, singing along with her rocking horse - "I'm a little pony, crip, crap, crip, crap." The song actually goes, "I'm a little pony, clippity, clop, clippity, clop."

Shoplifter

Saturday morning, Wil took Addie with him to get the car washed.

Quick tangent. I've been craving any type of cold drink lately - slushies, milk shakes, smoothies, Icees, just plain ice, it doesn't matter as long as it's freezing cold and wet. In fact, if I could figure out a way to make even sort of healthy, I would drink all of my calories for the day and forgo eating altogether.

So, back to Saturday morning. I requested a slushy from the gas station where the car was being washed. Wil and Addie went inside while they were working on the car to get my slushy. While Wil was paying, Addie was into everything under the counter - because they like to keep the ring pops and the candy and the gum right at eye level for kids. Before they left, Wil grabbed all of the candies from Addie's hands and stuffed them back under the counter.

Wil put Addie in the car, and then walked around to the other side to buckle her in. By the time he got to the other side of the car, she was chewing on a piece of gum and clutching the pack in one hand and a second piece in the other. Wil was amazed that she was able to find gum so quickly in newly cleaned car, took away the pack and grabbed a piece for himself as he climbed into the drivers seat.

When he got home, Wil realized it was Trident gum. This only matters because we don't ever buy Trident brand gum...ever. Then he looked more closely at the pack and realized only three pieces were missing. We NEVER leave unopened gum in the car - if we buy it, it's always because we want a piece.

We're pretty sure our two year old is a shoplifter. We'll be turning her into police the next time she starts acting up and not listening!

Baby Shower

My sister-in-law Nicole and my good friend Alison threw me a baby shower for the twins! It was a fun morning and I was amazed by how many people came to celebrate. We received so many great gifts - we are definitely blessed to have such great family and friends.

The diaper cake Nicole made - it was beautiful!

Addie, the big sister, having fun at the party.

Opening presents - we received SO many cute clothes!

T is for Two

I can't believe my baby girl turned two already! We had a Sesame Street birthday party for her at the park by our house. She had a blast!

The birthday girl - in her Cookie shirt! Next time we'll remember to take her picture BEFORE we eat lunch. :-)

Elmo, Oscar and Big Bird veggie/fruit trays.

 Sesame Street cupcakes

Eating dessert - or, you know, licking the frosting off the top!

 Playing with her new presents.

Goodie bags for the guests, complete with cookies and goldfish.

The Way Addie Sleeps

A couple months ago, Addie realized her bed no longer had bars on it and she could get out while she was supposed to be taking a nap. I would hear her in her room playing away, and would ignore her until she fell asleep.

I found her in some interesting positions after she finally did fall asleep. It's hard to tell, but she is actually sleeping on top of all her toys in this one. She covered herself with her blanket before she fell asleep.

Later that week I found her passed out asleep on her big bear.

It took a while, but eventually, Addie figured out how to open her door. She would open it, throw out a toy, close it and then repeat the sequence until there was nothing left in her room. I decided to completely ignore it, thinking it would lose it's appeal if it wasn't forbidden. Until, she started crying. I went back to her room to find out what was wrong and found this. She was upset because she couldn't get the wooden rocking chair far enough out of her room to shut the door. Silly girl!

A friend taught me you could use a wash cloth or small piece of cloth to "lock" the door so she couldn't open it. It is a wonderful trick! We haven't had to use it in a long time because Addie has learned she has to stay in her room until after she sleeps, but every once in a while it still comes in handy.
