The Joys of Babysitting, Lesson 3

When all else fails, take them to someone else's house...

We love you, Anna!

The Joys of Babysitting, Lesson 2

I have NO IDEA how Alison taught her girls to enjoy doing chores and cleaning, but I am IMPRESSED! This morning they actually asked if there were any chores they could do!

Paige swept the dirt from the back patio (Elvis got mad at us a couple of nights ago and dug a large hole in our filled in moat). Then, Kendall cleaned the table with Clorox wipes and Ashton vacuumed the living room and swept the kitchen. They wanted to do more so Kendall used wipes to clean any spots on the floor and Ashton vacuumed our large couch.

Then Paige came in and wanted to help so she vacuumed our love seat (I have been meaning to vacuum these couches for weeks!) and Ashton and Paige cleaned out the bath tub in the hall bathroom which had collected quite a bit of dust. Right now, Kendall is vacuuming the hall. I don't think my house has ever been so clean!

I tried to get them to fold laundry for me too, but I think that is the only chore they shot down - SMART girls!!!

The Joys of Babysitting, Lesson 1

Wil and I are babysitting Paige, Ashton and Kendall this weekend.

Last night Paige and I went to the grocery store to get cookie baking supplies while Wil, Ashton and Kendall stayed home and ordered pizza (our dinner). While Wil was home with the girls, and Paige and I were at the store, a funny thing happened that I am going to retell as Wil told me.

Allow me to preface this story by saying that Elvis is a boy dog and although we have had him neutered certain parts of his anatomy still appear seemingly at random.

Kendall: "What's that pink thing coming out of Elvis's butt?"

Wil - from the other side of the room where he is unable to see Elvis and has not caught on to what she is talking about yet: "There's a pink thing coming out of Elvis's butt?" Inside of his head: "I hope there's not something wrong."

Wil - who has now traveled across the room and can clearly see what Kendall is talking about: "I don't know." (Come on, what would you have said?)

Kendall: "You should pull it out."

Wil: "No, I think he'll be ok."

Sleeping Through the Night

Junior spent the night Friday so Lili and Lalo could have a date night. I'm pretty sure it was his very FIRST sleepover, and we loved having him.

He is such a good baby! Junior fell asleep right on time and it seemed as if Lalo's assurances that he sleeps through the night would come true...until about 3:45 a.m. I picked him up and said, "your dad lied to me!" Wil made him a bottle and after only two ounces, he was back asleep. I was impressed that even when he woke up fussy, he wasn't that fussy! He woke up again around 6, finished the rest of the bottle and then went back to sleep on our bed until after 8. This is the picture I sent to Lili and Lalo to assure them that he was just fine...after they sent me a text message asking if they could have him back. I think he looks comfy!

Upside Down

We got our property tax house valuation from the County Assessor's Office in the mail today. I think this is the time of year people used to hate because it meant their property taxes were about to go up...in 2009, this is the time of year people hate because it means they are about to find out how far their house value has fallen. I have two thoughts about this subject...
  • First, we bought our house as a repo, so we paid $50,000 less than the other houses for sale in our neighborhood. Not only were we certain we got a great deal on our house, we have not worried about the falling housing market, because how far could it fall...it couldn't possibly fall that much in less than one year.
  • Second, we are upside down in our house after less than one year. Our house is now worth $40,000 (and change) less than what we paid for it.
There are many reasons I am telling myself this doesn't matter.
  • First, it means LESS property taxes - can you really complain about that?
  • Second, we have no intention of selling our house in the near future...by the time we sell, the value will have gone back up, so it doesn't really matter.
  • Third, we LOVE our house, our neighborhood and our ward!
  • Fourth, even with all of these reasons why it shouldn't matter, it still bothers me...just a little bit.

Rope

Elvis's new favorite toy is a rope. Wil brought a long rope home for him from work. He then cut off a piece of the rope and tied a knot in it so Elvis could play tug-of-war and left the other piece in the garage for future tug-of-war ropes. Elvis LOVES his tug-of-war rope. About a week ago, he came in from the garage carrying the long piece - I was busy with something and didn't have time to play tug-of-war for more than a few minutes. He was bummed, so I took the rope and put it in the door.

He would play for a couple of minutes, leave and then come back to pull on the rope again a few minute later. He couldn't figure it out. I now LOVE this game...because it keeps him occupied for quite a while while I'm cleaning or baking or eating dinner.

Antique Cameras

Wil's Dad and brother commented on how old my camera is a few weeks ago. I got it for my birthday my freshman year of college and I love this camera! It can take photos in black and white or color or sepia, you can change the flash brightness, change the shutter speed, take movies and do an array of other things I love!

However, I think that Wil's Dad and brother jinxed my camera when they talked about how old it was. It's almost like my camera heard them and thought...hey, I am old...it's time to retire.

When we went to the zoo last week, it started acting a little weird, but if you turned it off and then turned it back on, it would fix itself. However, last night at the All Star Game, it pretty much died...Wil wanted his picture by the life-sized Amare Stoudemire painted on the wall. It turned out great - look how long Stoudemire's arms are...

Wil offered to take my picture by the life-sized painting of Shaq (by the way, he's ginormously tall!!!). It turned out like this...

We tried turning it off and then turning it back on, no such luck. I even hoped it would be better today, but no dice! It is time to get a new camera. As soon as I get a new one, I'll take a picture of my old one and post it as a memorial of sorts. I'm going to miss this camera, but on the bright side I can get one with all new bells and whistles that didn't even exist five years ago!

All Stars

The NBA All Star game was in Phoenix this year. I was lucky enough to win tickets from work, so Wil and I got to attend the NBA All Star game last night! It was the COOLEST thing - how many people can say they've been to an All Star game???

The West won 146-119. At the end, they even played around a bit more - for the last 90 seconds, we got to watch the players go back and forth slam dunking the basketball, unopposed. How embarrassing for the player who tried to slam dunk the ball and missed - the ball went flying in the other direction!

The weird part about this game was not being as invested in one of the teams. We cheered for the West, but there wasn't an emotional tie, like you have to one of your home sports teams. It was kind of fun this way because we were able to spend more time laughing at the mascots and people watching. The Miami Heat mascot was my favorite - he was a big, orange thing and he was hysterical! If you look at the above photo closely - you can even see the Phoenix Suns Gorilla mid flying dunk.

We had a blast! There were a ton of stars in the audience, that we got to see on the jumbo-tron (strangely enough, there weren't any stars sitting by us in section 226). I'm trying to figure out how to use our printer/scanner/copier to scan in our tickets...I think they're really cool looking...but, for some reason I can't figure it out. I will have to post a picture of our tickets another day.

Happy Valentine's Day

Wil and I decided to stay home for Valentine's Day and make our own dinner. It was quite possibly one of the best ideas we've ever had! We didn't have to wait in line, and we probably ate a much better meal than we could have at a restaurant.

We ate outside on our patio, because it was such a beautiful night...we even talked Elvis into going inside so we could eat in peace. Our meal consisted of grilled salmon (Wil is a really good cook and is quickly becoming an expert griller as well), grilled asparagus (one of my absolute favorite vegetables!), baked potatoes, a salad with lettuce picked fresh from our garden and fresh squeezed lemonade...you KNOW you're jealous!

Cookies with Grandma

When I was a little girl, I thought my grandma didn't like to bake. She taught me how to bake and then I became the baker at home. To my amazement, my Grandma actually quite enjoys baking. In fact, Wil's family knows her as the baker! She found a great Valentine's Day cookie recipe and we made cookies together Tuesday night. It was great fun!

Head Over Heels

My most embarrassing moment of the zoo trip, and quite possibly of the past three years, came when we were looking these guys...I can't remember what they were called, but to me they looked like overgrown anteaters.

There were two fences around the viewing area for these creatures. Both were made of wooden logs with slanted edges and were a few feet apart. The one closest to the animals was a bit taller than the one closest to us. This funny looking animal was standing close to the fence and I was trying to take his picture - again, because I thought this was about the weirdest looking animal I had ever seen.

Unfortunately, as I was leaning against the fence that hit just above my knees, I lost my balance and tumbled head first over the first fence into the gutter area between the fences. I was MORTIFIED! I always think the people on the news who get injured at zoos because they jumped or fell into the animal cage are idiots...but alas, I have seen the error of my ways and will try really hard not to make fun of those people as much.

At the time, I was so embarrassed, I didn't realize it hurt - my legs were resting against the pointy end of the log so when I fell, I scraped up my thighs...luckily my pants didn't rip. My thighs are nicely scraped and bruised, to the point that it hurts too bad to cross my legs. Unfortunately, I have a short memory...so I keep trying to cross my legs and then saying, ow...OW!

All Creatures of Our God and King

Lynda's birthday is tomorrow, so we celebrated yesterday by going to the zoo. We went to the Wildlife World Zoo and it was great fun! They had signs with quotes and facts about animals throughout the zoo that I loved. They reminded me what an amazing world God has created for us. Following are some of those quotes along with some of my favorite photos from the day.

Scientists believe 95 percent of all life forms on earth have not yet been discovered and described.

"The diversity of life forms, so numerous that we have yet to identify most of them, is the greatest wonder of this planet." - E.O. Wilson

"We may be able to survive in a world where pandas, condors and rhinos exist only as pictures in a book, but do we want to?" - Jack Hanna

More than 120 million visitors enjoy zoos in the U.S. each year. This is more than attend all professional football, basketball and hockey games combined.

Are You Ready for Some Football?

We invited ourselves over to my Grandma's house to watch the Cardinal's very first Super Bowl. Wil's brother-in-law barbecued and we all had a great time! I was in charge of dessert, so I put my cake decorating skills to work.

Feel free to ooh and ahh over my cake...I have to admit, I was pretty impressed with it myself! I also made square cupcakes that spelled out GO CARDINALS! I thought the girls could eat the cupcakes - I was worried there would not be enough of this cake for everyone, but they refused. Whenever I would offer a cupcake, I would hear, "I want Cardinal's Cake." I even tried telling them that the letter on the cupcake was for their name...nope, not good enough!

Adaly, Xujey and Lyzette with Tito

It was a great game. I was holding Junior, our youngest nephew, in the back of the room and I had to keep reminding myself jumping up and down was not an option while holding a baby. It was fun to watch everyone else jump up and down and scream as we scored that last touch down!!! We thought we had sealed the game with that catch...but alas, it was not to be. The Steelers won their sixth Super Bowl (a record for the most Super Bowls by one franchise) 27 to 23.

I love all the Cardinals Red!!!

Sign Stealers, Not to Be Confused with Steelers

E.B. Lane is the agency of record for the Arizona Cardinals. Apparently, our advertising department came up with this year's slogan - We Do This Together. So, when the Cardinals went to the NFC Championship game, E.B. Lane had a large, 30 foot banner made with the We Do This Together slogan, the Cardinals logo and an E.B. Lane logo. The banner was stolen sometime the day of the NFC Championship game...let's take a small side trip into my head, where a drunk bum is running down McDowell with the banner draped around him like a Superman cape. Don't worry, whoever stole the banner was nice enough to leave the poles it had been attached to.

So, when we arrived at work Monday morning and discovered our beautiful banner had been stolen, we did what any creative advertising agency would do...we made another banner to hang on the building (where it couldn't get stolen) and then made 50 small signs to place in the front lawn with the purpose of being stolen.

On the bottom, in small print, the signs read, "Go right ahead. Feel free to steal this sign. We'll look the other way. We promise. Just make sure you smear on the face paint, make some of that dip you always bring to parties, and throw your jersey on for the big game February 1st. Enjoy, from your friends at eblane.com."

Our signs were a hit - they made the news and everything (which, if we're honest was the point!). We had to make 50 more because the first ones disappeared so fast. I stole one, and even my Grandma took a trip to E.B. Lane to steal two of the signs - which she then gave to her favorite grandson Andy.

Would you believe E.B. Lane even got an e-mail from a woman thanking us?! Apparently her daughters are high school kids that don't ever make trouble and they had a blast legally stealing our signs!

Dog House

You're probably wondering why I am up at 11 p.m. on a work night...the answer is that Elvis is in the dog house...and by in the dog house, I mean that he is IN THE DOG HOUSE FOR A VERY LONG TIME!

Let me preface this story by telling you that we believe Elvis is house trained. He has only had one accident in the house, ONE. He always stands by the door when he needs to go outside. I was outside playing with him tonight and he had ample time to relieve himself...but why pee on the grass when you can pee on MY BED!?!?!? GROSS! We didn't even know Elvis had been on our bed until Wil walked into our room shortly after nine to get ready to go to bed and noticed a HUGE pee spot on our bed. You should also know when Elvis pees he pees A LOT! That means there was pee all over our mattress...did I mention GROSS!!!!!!

We went to THREE different Wal-Mart stores tonight looking for this really good cleaner, but all three were out of it - apparently there was a run on pet cleaner at Wal-Mart today, who knew? This is a picture of Wil surveying our other options. Hopefully, we made the right choice - I should be able to tell you tomorrow...in case you ever own a dog that decides to relieve himself on your bed.

As I write, Wil is very kindly taking care of the pee spot on our bed...and then we are going to sleep. Not in OUR bed, but in the two TWIN beds in our spare room because our bed is WET AND COVERED IN DOG URINE!

Have I mentioned how very, very long Elvis will be in THE DOG HOUSE?!?!?
