Terror Watch List

When I was in school, I flew frequently. So, it was bound to happen that one time I would forget to remove the pepper spray from my key ring and put it in my checked luggage.

I think it was my senior year, and I was at Sky Harbor. The nice security guard gave me several options: 1. mail it to myself (oh wait, you can't mail it to yourself); 2. go back to the check-in desk and check it (did I mention that at this point, my flight was leaving in about twenty minutes and there was absolutely no time to go back to the check-in desk, check my pepper spray and make it back through security in time...not to mention, how do you check one thing of pepper spray? I was imagining it in a baggy all by itself going round and round on the luggage carousel); 3. have someone come get it (yeah, like that's going to happen when my grandma was probably already half way home); 4. throw it away.

With so many options to choose from, it's probably hard to believe that I chose to throw it away. But first, the nice security guard had to take down all of my driver's license information in his book for bad little girls who forgot to check their pepper spray. I honestly think that I am now on some sort of watch list at the airport. Ever since this ill-fated day, my checked luggage almost always gets randomly searched.

This weekend, when we flew from Phoenix to Salt Lake, I wasn't even allowed to check-in online. I was told I needed additional verification. So, we checked Wil in online (so he could save us seats) and then I checked in at the airport. Since I had to check in already anyway, I checked the bag in under my name.

We got to Nancy and Bryce's house and I thought...hey, my bag actually didn't get checked - I think that's the first time in years. But no, I soon found this friendly note from the TSA saying my bag had been randomly selected.

On the way home, the airline let me check-in online. So, when we checked our bag, we put it under Wil's name...guess who's suitcase was NOT randomly selected to be searched on the way home?

I feel way more secure - I thought it was a BIGGER bureaucracy than that!
